9th Grade Students who are Overweight or Obese

Measurement Period: 2018-2019
This indicator shows the percentage of public school students in grade 9 identified as overweight or obese (i.e., scoring above the Healthy Fitness Zone in the annual California Physical Fitness Test). These students, who fall into the Needs Improvement or Needs Improvement (Health Risk) categories, have a higher composite percent body fat measurement and body mass index than what is considered in the healthy zone for their age.

Why is this important?

Maintaining a healthy weight is important for children and adolescents. Obese and overweight children and adolescents are at risk for multiple health problems during their youth and as adults. Obese children and adolescents are more likely to become obese as adults. According to the American Society for Metabolic and Barietric Surgery, overweight adolescents have a 70% chance of becoming overweight or obese as adults. Obese and overweight youth are more likely to have risk factors associated with cardiovascular diseases, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes. There are also health risks associated with being underweight such as weakened immune systems, malnourishment, and inhibited development and growth. Staying at a healthy weight helps prevent and control multiple chronic diseases and improves quality of life.
