Welcome to KPFP.ORG's Newsletter, Issue #10

December is here and 2009 is drawing to a close. Kings Partnership for Prevention will be entering the New Year as a 501c3, an accomplishment we have been working toward for several years.

This official non-profit status brings with it great opportunity for the growth of the Coalition and to take on new and progressive prevention projects. Our mission remains constant and that mission is: “To proactively engage our communities by supporting, participating in and creating opportunities for healthy life choices".

May all of your Holiday choices be healthy and on behalf of Kings Partnership for Prevention, we look forward to your participation in our Prevention Community in 2010. The next KPFP Meeting will be January 15th at Hannah's House in Hanford at 10:00 AM. We look forward to seeing you there.

December Events

Kings County Tobacco-Free Partnership & Corcoran Drug, Alcohol & Tobacco Task Force Invite you world

Date:      Monday, December 7, 2009
Time:      6:00-7:00 PM
Location: Corcoran City Council Chambers,
1029 Chittenden Avenue
Corcoran, CA  93212

Chronic diseases cause the greatest number of preventable death and disease in the United States.  Each day in the U.S. more than 1,300 kids become regular, daily smokers and between one third and one half will eventually die as a result of their addiction .  The causes of chronic disease are more complex than poor choices of an individual.  Easy access to tobacco and a preponderance of advertising exhorting the benefits of tobacco lead youth to believe that tobacco is a socially acceptable habit.  Reducing youth access to tobacco in their communities with strong Retailer Licensing Ordinances is an effective way to reduce youth uptake of tobacco.

We need your attendance and your support on December 7th!

For additional information on how you can support this effort, contact Oralia Vallejo at 559-584-1411 ext. 2602, or Anthony Gracian at 559-362-9958.

The youth of Kings County are counting on you.

NicotineNew Campaign Targets Health Care Providers:
Providers Urged to Treat the Disease of Nicotine Addiction

What if a patient were struggling with a serious disease and her health care provider did nothing to treat it? That happens whenever a patient suffering the disease of nicotine addiction leaves a provider's office without getting help to quit. Fortunately, providers everywhere are realizing that this deadly addiction can and must be treated. A new campaign is helping to remind them.

With a grant from the Centers for Disease Control, the California Smokers' Helpline has created a communications campaign targeting health care providers statewide. It urges providers to ASK their patients if they use tobacco, ADVISE the ones who do to quit, and REFER them to the Helpline for free telephone counseling.

Launched in October and running through June 2010, the campaign includes ads and an article on "Treating Patients with Nicotine Addiction" in health care provider publications, banner ads on their websites, and postcards sent to over 23,000 health care professionals throughout the state, including members of the California Academy of Family Physicians, California Association of Physician Assistants, California Primary Care Association, California Society of Health-System Pharmacists, and California Safety Net Institute.

New Free Tools for Promoting Ask, Advise, Refer

To help more organizations reach health care providers with the Ask, Advise, Refer message, we have created a number of new tools, which may be accessed free here at the TECC web site:
Article on "Treating Patients with Nicotine Addiction" for use in health care provider publications.
Print ads in three sizes, in both color and black and white. Banner ads in seven sizes. Postcard for mailing to health care providers.

If you are interested in working with the health care providers in your area to increase referrals to the Helpline, you may want to consider working with local affiliates or members of the organizations listed above.

Incentive for Increasing Referrals

And, just as a reminder, the Helpline is also offering a small incentive -- a $100 VISA debit card -- to local tobacco control programs for increasing referrals to the Helpline from the health care providers in their counties from July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010. Click here for more details.

For More Information

If you would like more information or technical assistance in promoting cessation to the health care providers in your area, please call us at (858) 300-1010.

Together, the Helpline and health care providers are helping patients quit!

Call Your Member of Congress in Support of Screening, Brief Interventions and Referral to Treatment Today

BACKGROUND
On Thursday, October 29th, the House released its healthcare reform bill, the Affordable Healthcare for America Act. The bill is a combination of the House Tri-Committee language (comprised of the Education and Labor, Energy and Commerce, and Ways and Means Committees). A vote on this legislation could happen in the House as early as this week. Although the House merged bill contains a number of strong provisions for substance use disorder services, the legislation does not include substance use screening and brief intervention services as reimbursable preventative services, a provision that was a part of the Education and Labor Committee approved bill.

WHAT YOU CAN DO
Please call your member of Congress today and ask them to support including SBIRT (Screening, Brief Interventions, Referral to Treatment) as part of the revised House bill. You can reach them by calling the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and asking for their office. (If you don't know who your member of Congress is, you can find out by going to http://capwiz.com/cadca/home/ and entering your zip code.)

TIMING
Please call your member of Congress Today.

Prevention: Wellness FundLandmark Investment in Prevention: HHS Announces Stimulus Prevention and Wellness Fund

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act’s (ARRA) Prevention and Wellness Fund. The initiative, entitled Communities Putting Prevention to Work, will create healthier communities across the nation through innovative and proven approaches that address physical activity, nutrition, obesity, and tobacco use.

The dedication of these funds represents a “historic and long overdue investment in communities that will achieve long-term, lasting improvements in physical activity, nutrition, weight, and tobacco cessation” said HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius; it is also the culmination of a national movement for prevention that many of you a played a part in. We commend every one who worked to advocate that prevention belonged in ARRA. As an organization whose mission is directly tied to the advancement of prevention, this is an incredible opportunity and success.

Prevention advocates must now work together to ensure that these dollars have the greatest impact possible. By investing in quality prevention that promotes equitable health and safety outcomes, community engagement, and multi-sector collaboration, and emphasizing broad-scale, sustainable change, funded communities and those of us who support their efforts hold the keys to success.

Please FORWARD this alert to others interested in primary prevention and encourage them to JOIN THE NETWORK so they too can be informed as new prevention-related resources are released.
